How to Buy The Right Drumsticks

by Drummer on August 29, 2009

Some people might think a drumstick is a just a drumstick, but there are more than subtle differences in drumsticks and buying the right one for you could make a big difference.

The first criteria for selecting a drumstick will be size. This will be determined by the type band you will be playing in and the percussion style it employs. If you are playing drums in a marching band or a rock band, you will want to consider buying a drumstick that is thicker and heavier. This is due to the amount of force needed to play the drums in this context. If you are playing in a lighter context, such as a jazz quartet, you will want to consider a smaller drumstick.

You also need to consider what material the drumsticks are made of. In the past, wood was the only choice and, of course, wood drumsticks were susceptible to breaking. So, if durability is an issue, you may want to consider buying carbon drumsticks as they have been reported to be more durable than wood drumsticks.

You also have the choice of what type tips you can get on your drumsticks. In the past, wood was the type tip you could get, but nylon is now an option and has been proven to be more durable than wood.

The last consideration is how the drumstick feels in your hand. With the myriad of choices of sizes and compositions, you will want to take some time to get a feel for the drumsticks and see if they feel right in your hands.

Buying the right drumstick for your playing style and the feel it has in your hands is important to how you will perform.
