Types of Drumsticks to Play on your Drums

by Drummer on August 2, 2009

Arguably, the drummer is the heart and soul of any band. Not only does the drummer establish the beat for the band to play off of, the drummer also emphasizes and complements the sound of the vocals and tall of the other instruments. The drummer is a critical member of any band. However, the drummer is nothing without his drumsticks.

Drumsticks are critical for playing the drums. Without them, how would you expect the drummer to play the drums? Should he just slap the snares, cymbals, and drums with his hand? That simply would just not workout as you would not get the desired sound and you simply do not have as much control over the sound by slapping the instruments with your hand than if you use drumsticks.

There are many types of drumsticks drummers can use to play the drums. In addition to the conventional wood drumsticks, drummers can also use carbon drumsticks.

Wooden drumsticks are the drumsticks that most people are used to seeing a drummer play the drums. Wooden drumsticks are normally made from hickory, oak, and maple. However, wooden drumsticks are most commonly made from hickory due to the fact that they can last a lot longer than oak and maple drumsticks. In addition, hickory can absorb a lot more shock than other wood making it easier to hit the cymbals and eases fatigue in the hands and wrists.

Carbon drumsticks are, obviously, not made from wood. The carbon polymer offers the same weight and balance as wooden drumsticks but is also stiffer and is capable of absorbing as much shock, if not more, as hickory drumsticks. However, to an experienced drummer, carbon drumsticks definitely feel different from wooden drumsticks.
